ONE ON ONE WITH DWAYNE GAYLE
What led you to become a digital artist/motion graphics designer/editor?
I was always inspired by animation and film production work from well-known companies and so I became eager to learn about animation. Cartoons were a big part of my life, I would draw in my binder during school hours. Then the education I received at Pratt Institute changed my outlook and approach to digital art. After I graduated, I started working as a freelance web designer and I wasn’t happy because it didn’t give me enough flexibility to design and tell the kind of stories I enjoy or grew up watching. I knew I couldn’t work at a major animation studio yet because my portfolio needed to be improved. However, I was given the opportunity to work with small companies creating logo animations. After some time I decided to work as a freelance motion designer and web designer. I branched away from web design due to the high demands for motion graphics and animation. As I continued to work with clients, it was evident that this is what I wanted to do.
The work you do seems extremely comprehensive and meticulous. What does it take to become a digital artist/motion graphics designer/editor?
It takes practice, patience, and passion. As a freelancer you know that you are not the only one working in this field, however, you push yourself every day to learn new techniques and trades. The meticulous parts are fun to me. I enjoy learning the technical aspects of a program to help fine tune my craft and tell a story as effectively as possible.
