FOUNDER & CEO, ZANDIR SANTOS
Zandir Santos was born in the Cape Verde Islands, an archipelago nation on the coast of West Africa. An immigrant to the United States, he attended East Providence High School, East Providence, RI. He holds a Business Management degree from Rhode Island College, 2010.While in college Zandir began dabbling in film writing. However, it was not until he moved to New York in 2011 that he began pursuing film writing as a career option.
HIS JOURNEY'S INCEPTION
In 2011, while living in New York, Zandir would go on to write several feature length films while in pursuit of an agent. Contact was made with several agents but the reply was often the same, something along these lines: It’s pretty good, but it’s not what we’re looking for right now. However, determined, Zandir kept writing. He was confident his feature film scripts were great enough to be made into films and he would see through on that. Thus began his journey as, in additional to film writer, film director and editor.
In 2012, while living in Brooklyn, NY, Zandir volunteered, interned and worked as a production assistant on low budget independent short and feature length films to gain a broader understanding of filmmaking. In 2013 Zandir commenced his independent filmmaking career writing, directing and editing his own short films. He’s written, edited and directed eight short films, of various genres, with Marilyn Films production company. All of his released films are available on Marilynfilms.com and his foresseable releases will also be available on Marilynfilms.com.
Q and A WITH ZANDIR
WHERE DID THE IDEA FOR MARILYNFILMS.COM COME FROM?
I must say the idea of Marilynfilms.com, as it is today, came from me meeting so many incredibly talented Independent Filmmakers making incredible films, shorts and features, and seeing their films come to a dead end because, 1) they weren’t accepted into particular film festivals, 2) if they were accepted, the film had no life after the festivals and 3) no distribution, no monetization. With Marilynfilms.com we could provide the filmmaker a continuous platform for distribution and monetization where their financial reward is 80% on the dollar. And to us that’s very important because we believe that’s a great incentive for the filmmaker to continue to make amazing films.
NOW, TELL US ABOUT YOUR FILMS
Up to date, all of my films have all been short films. Varying from 6 minutes in length to 20 minutes. Generally the stories are inspired by me living life; from a ride on public transportation to a walk through a neighborhood to inspiration from true events. The topics vary from turbulent love stories to police injustice to immigrating, among others.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE FILM YOU'VE MADE?
Yes and no. Yes because when I’m working on a film it’s my favorite. And no because when I commence a new film, the latter and not the former becomes my favorite. I always say, the film that I’m presently working on is my favorite, because it truly is. At least that has been my experience up to this point.
YOU WRITE, DIRECT AND EDIT ALL OF YOUR FILMS. YOU'RE AN AUTEUR FILMMAKER, CORRECT?
For those reasons and others, yes, I am an auteur filmmaker. In my opinion, it’s really the best way to learn filmmaking. You develop your own uniqueness and learn to interject it into a film when it’s fitting. Taking on such tasks as an Independent Filmmaker has allowed me to develop my own creative filmmaking craft and take chances that otherwise could be restricted due to outsider input that would mandatorily have to be considered.
"OUTSIDER MANDATORY CONSIDERATIONS." LIKE WHAT, CAN YOU GIVE AN EXAMPLE?
Okay. For example one common factor that my films have had is that they don’t seem to give off a determined ending. They leave the viewer with an open parentheses to speculate on a conclusive ending that is only constrained by educated limitations of the character(s) within the narrative. That tends to be a no-no when you’re not independent. The outside mandatory consensus it that you tell the viewer how the film ends, and generally, a happy ending, whether it fits the context of the story or not.
WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU IN TERMS OF FILMS?
For the time being I’m very satisfied in telling incredible stories via short films. But certainly, feature filmmaking is projected in the development of my filmmaking career.
