Rashad Roulhac's Magnificent Authorial Debut: Fables and Fairy Tales of Cape Verde

RASHAD ROULHAC’S MAGNIFICENT AUTHORIAL DEBUT: FABLES AND FAIRY TALES OF CAPE VERDE

Rashad Roulhac is Cape Verdean American and is broadly known for his endeavors in filmmaking and more so as the founder and director of The Cape Verdean American Film Festival (CVAFF).

However, Rashad’s latest creative and artistic venture isn’t filmmaking, it’s literary. Yes, Rashad Roulhac has now distinguished himself as an author as well. His debut authorial work is Fables and Fairy Tales of Cape Verde, a very detailed, descriptive and engaging body of work.

Rashad’s Fables and Fairy Tales of Cape Verde imprints a phenomenal breakthrough in Cape Verdean inspired literature. Fables and Fairy Tales of Cape Verde couples historical accounts with an infusion of stark imagination and Cape Verdean jargon to bring an exemplary body of work that will inspire readers for generations to come.”

Can you tell us about your writing process for Fables and Fairy Tales of Cape Verde?

The writing process is a very diligent one. You have to immerse yourself into the story and the characters. You have to become the characters and take experiences from life to bring your characters to life.

What impact are you hoping Fables and Fairy Tales of Cape Verde will have in the literally field?

I hope that Fables and Fairly Tales of Cape Verde inspires young readers to use their imagination and their location/surroundings to create a new world that outsiders have never heard of.

Cape Verde is still unknown to millions and millions of people and hopefully my book will be a starting stone for an endless path of discovery of the Cape Verde islands to be laid down.

Is Fables and Fairy Tales of Cape Verde a fusion of historic and contemporary Cape Verde?

The book does have unknown historic information in it, especially in the tale of “Pirata di Praia”. The late great Raymond Almeida (which whom the book is inspired from) gave his life to researching this information about Cape Verde’s history.

Fables and Fairy Tales of Cape Verde include three different tales, stories. Do you have a preferred one?

I love all three of the tales in the book. Each one has its own love story and experiences within me. But “Pirata di Praia” was definitely the most historic one to write.

I love all three of the tales in the book. Each one has its own love story and experiences within me. But “Pirata di Praia” was definitely the most historic one to write.

The fables, specifically Pirata di Praia, are sprinkled with Cape Verdean jargon. What was your intent in sprinkling the jargons in these fables?

I used some Cape Verdean words in the book to give it a unique flavor for readers, Cape Verdeans and non Cape Verdeans.

I’ve been approached to have a version of the book written in the native Cape Verdean language, Kriolu, so that should be coming in the near future.

In the epilogue of the fable Pirata Di Praia it is stated, “It is also recorded that this was the first reported piratical use of the skull and crossbones flag that would live on in infamy as the symbol for all pirates.” Can you explain the significance of this statement?

The significance of the pirate crossbones on the flag is huge. I mean all over the world in movies, on TV and in books the skull and bones is the main symbol for Pirates. So the fact that its origin and first time used was connected to Cape Verde is astonishing.
